All of Nice starts at the end of the street
Rue Halévy is short and runs straight down to the Promenade des Anglais: step out, walk for sixty seconds, and the pebbles are under your feet. You end up going back three times a day without thinking about it.
The rest follows: the terraces in the pedestrian streets, place Masséna and its tram, the flower market on cours Saleya. Stopwatch in hand, this is what it looks like from the front door.

The studio
Silence, in the middle of the Carré d'Or
It is the first thing guests notice and the last thing they mention on the way out: you hear nothing. The studio does not face the avenue but an inner garden full of trees, sheltered from horns and scooters. With the windows open, the background noise comes down to birds and, some evenings, a conversation on a terrace three floors below.
The rest follows the same logic: a proper double bed, shutters and curtains that give complete darkness, reversible air conditioning that does summer in January and the opposite in August. Add fibre at 946 Mbps and a television already signed in to Netflix, and all that is left is putting the suitcase down.

The neighbourhood
The Carré d'Or, at any hour
It is the liveliest part of Nice without being the loudest: pedestrian streets, sunny terraces even in January, ice cream parlours you rarely leave empty-handed, shops and serious restaurants a few steps away. Place Masséna and the tram are six minutes away, the Old Town and its flower market twelve.
And once the city quietens down, the balcony faces an inner garden. The only audible traffic jam is the birds.
Nice, briefly
A city that takes winter on a terrace
Nice lives outdoors. Close to three hundred days of sun a year, a bay facing due south, and terraces that stay open while the rest of France reaches for coats. In February the Carnival takes over place Masséna. In July the jazz festival moves into the gardens. In September the sea is still warm and the beaches have calmed down. There is no bad season here, only different moods.
The city reads in layers: the Italian old town with its ochre façades, the Belle Époque palaces along the Promenade, the hills climbing towards Cimiez and its olive trees. In between sits the Carré d'Or, where the shops, the ice cream and the good tables are, five minutes from everything else.
And if you feel like going further, the train follows the coast: Villefranche-sur-Mer in ten minutes, Monaco in twenty-five, Cannes in thirty-five. The studio then becomes a base camp rather than a destination.
